We choose the technique according to the type of pipe, its age and where it runs. In older installations we usually combine several methods to confirm the exact spot before opening anything.
A geophone picks up the sound of water escaping from a pressurised pipe. It is the fastest method in flats and apartments in Las Lagunas or on the coast, with pipes embedded under the floor or in the walls.
We fill the pipe with a harmless mixture of hydrogen and nitrogen, which escapes through the break and is detected at the surface. It is the right method for the buried networks of residential estates and for pipes under gardens or terraces.
A thermal imaging camera shows temperature differences in floors and walls. It lets us trace hot water pipes and find the source of damp without opening up, including in the thick walls of houses in Mijas Pueblo.
We run a camera through downpipes, drains and inspection chambers to find breaks, blockages or open joints, which are common in the drainage systems of older residential estates.

As a general rule, the communal network up to each property’s meter or stopcock is the community’s responsibility, and from there inwards it is the owner’s.
